The Division of Corporation and Professional Licensing staffs the electrical administrator program. The Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development adopts regulations to carry out laws governing electrical administrators in Alaska. It makes final licensing decisions and takes disciplinary actions against people who violate licensing laws.

Electricians are regulated by the Department of Labor, Labor Standards and Safety, Mechanical Inspection Section.

The Board of Electrical Examiners is responsible for the administration of Arkansas' laws governing the licensing of electricians. The following classes of license are available: master electrician, journeyman electrician, residential master electrician, residential journeyman electrician, air conditioning electrician, and industrial maintenance electrician. The board is also responsible for registering electrical apprentices.

Additionally, the board establishes standards for the performance of electrical work in the state.

The Board protects the public against faulty construction installations through the licensing of contractors. The Board establishes and administers standards for the licensing of the contractors.

Iowa Business License Information Center

The State of Iowa requires that “construction contractors” register with the Iowa Division of Labor, and renew that registration every two years. The law is found in Chapter 91C of the Iowa Code.

The law requires that all individual contractors and businesses performing “construction” work within Iowa be registered with the Division of Labor if they earn at least $2,000 a year from that work.

The primary responsibility of the Board is to insure the competency of electricians through examination; to issue licenses to those qualified to hold the title of Master electrician, Journeyman electrician, Limited electrician, Apprentice electrician, Journeyman-in-training electrician or Helper electrician; to investigate complaints of noncompliance with or violations of the law and board rules; and to issue permits.
 

The State Board of Master Electricians issues only one license, Master Electrician. In Maryland the actual performance license to perform electrical work is issued by each of the local jurisdictions. Many of the local jurisdictions do issue additional categories of electrical licenses. All of these licenses are LESSER than a Master Electrician. For example some jurisdictions may issue a "general electrician", "limited electrician", or "low voltage" license as examples. If an individual were interested in obtaining a lesser license than a master electrician’s license, then it would be necessary to contact the local jurisdiction where you would anticipate working and determine if they offer a lesser license and the qualifications. Not all jurisdictions offer a lesser license. In those jurisdictions that do not, an individual would need a master electrician’s license to perform any electrical work.
 

The professionals licensed by the Examiners include Master Electricians (A), Journeyman Electricians (B), Systems Contractors (C) and Systems Technicians (D). "Systems" include fire warning, security.

The Examiners also assist local wiring inspectors in mediating code disputes between licensees and wiring inspectors.
 

Any persons engaged in the business of electrical contracting who are not in a local licensing jurisdiction should be licensed with the State Electrical Administrative Board.
 

This board licenses and regulates electrical contractors and is responsible for granting exemptions from licensure to persons or businesses engaged in telecommunications wiring in New Jersey. The Fire Alarm, Burglar Alarm and Locksmith Advisory Committee, which is under the supervision of the Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors, is currently developing rules, regulations and standards to govern the licensing and practice of fire and burglar alarm installers and locksmiths.

A contractor's license is required to bid and contract all electrical work including, but not limited to, sound, alarms, TV systems, computer data, telephone, etc. A journeyman's certificate of competence in the appropriate classification required to perform all electrical work, including low voltage, and special systems.

There are 10 different classifications of electrical contracting licenses.  Each license has a specific scope and limitation of work allowed.  The Limited (L), Intermediate (I), and Unlimited (U) classifications allow a licensee to perform residential, commercial and industrial work. The Residential dwelling license (SP-SFD) permits electrical contracting projects pertaining to single-family detached residential dwellings.  There are also six (6) special restricted electrical contracting classifications which allow only a limited phase of electrical contracting work:  Low Voltage (SP-LV), Elevator (SP-EL), Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning (SP-PH), Groundwater pump (SP-WP), Electric Sign (SP-ES), Swimming Pool (SP-SP).
 

The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) licenses commercial contractors for the following trades: Electrical, HVAC, Hydronics, Plumbing, and Refrigeration.

They do not License Residential or General Contractors. Contact your local Building Department for information regarding residential, general contracting or general construction.

The Building Codes Division licenses tradespersons in the boiler and pressure vessel, electrical, plumbing and manufactured housing industries.
 

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has no requirements related to the registration, certification or licensure of contractors (or their employees) that are engaged in the construction industry.

Some of Pennsylvania’s 2,565 municipalities have established local licensure or certification requirements for contractors or construction trades people. Typically, these requirements pertain to home improvement contractors, electrical contractors (or electricians), and plumbing contractors (or plumbers). Since the Commonwealth has no jurisdiction in this matter, the Department maintains no records concerning municipalities that have established licensure or certification requirements. This information can only be obtained by contacting the municipality where construction work will occur.

The mission of this Board is to regulate the practice of general and mechanical contracting, burglar and fire alarm system businesses and fire protection sprinkler contractors within South Carolina. The Board investigates complaints and disciplines contractors when necessary. General and Mechanical Contractors engage mainly in commercial construction. However, their license allows them to also engage in residential projects. The South Carolina Residential Builders Commission regulates residential homebuilders and registered specialty contractors that exclusively engage in residential construction.

The Commission authorizes persons to practice residential home building and home inspecting by qualifying and issuing a license to homebuilders, a registration to specialty contractors, and a license to home inspectors.  Additionally the Commission receives and processes complaints against those persons authorized to practice.
